Drawing
New Art Class for Adults:
Beginning Drawing We can work with pen & ink, charcoal, graphite, colored pencils, and oil pastels (No chalk pastels please). You may bring your own subjects for drawing or choose from those provided. There will be weekly demonstrations and exercises based on basic drawing techniques and principles such as contour, composition, perspective, shading and value. All levels welcome. This is a fun and skill-enhancing class done in a friendly cooperative workshop format.
Times: Offered Wednesdays (9/16-11/4) 1-4PM 8- 3 hr. meetings

- Grid Drawing, experiments w/ line thickness, and directional lines and swirls
- Class overview and discussion
Wk 2 Composition:
- Composition lesson
- Set-up still life,
- Draw 9:20-11:00
- Clean-up & critique 11:15-11:50 focus on composition
Wk 3 Light and Shadow:
- Demo cross hatch, lines, squiggles or wash for shadow & negative space
- Set up more complex still life
- Draw
- Clean-up & critique focus on value balance & dramatic lights/shadows
- Slide show
Wk 4 Perspective:
- Demo 3 point perspective
- Set-up till life w/ table & in room
- Drawing time (with pencil guide lines)
- Clean-up and critique focus on illusion of depth
Wk 5 Portraiture & Proportion:
- Demo portraits, Practice (overhead, step by step if voted for)
- Set-up partners for modeling
- Drawing time
- Clean –up & critique focus on proportions
- Reminder: Wear outdoor clothes next meeting!
Wk 6 Individualized and plein air Projects:
- Slides show
- Adding Color: washes and colored pencil demo
- Drawing/ painting time Outside weather permitting
- Clean & Critique
Wk 7 Individualized Projects:

Wk 8 Individualized Projects and Pot luck:
- Slides, books & magazines for inspiration

Materials List
- 10-20 sheets bristol board or drawing paper (at least 100 lb recommended)
- Small plastic or glass jar
- Pen set with at least 4 nib sizes (Micron or equivalent brand)
- 1 # 8 round watercolor brush (or similar equivalent)
- 1 sheet watercolor paper-any size you’d like to work on
- Ideas and enthusiasm!
Optional: watercolors, colored inks, colored pencils, more nibs, specialized paper or bristol board.
